JPS: The Jewish Publication Society

About JPS

Mission and History

The Jewish Publication Society is a rarity in the publishing world: over a century old, educational, and nonprofit. It was first founded in 1888 to provide the children of Jewish immigrants to America with books about their heritage in the language of the New World.

Over the years JPS has issued a body of works for all tastes and needs. Its many titles include biographies, histories, art books, holiday anthologies, books for young readers, religious and philosophical studies, translations of scholarly and popular classics—and, of course, the famous JPS TANAKH -- the translation of the Bible in English from the original Hebrew.

Funding that is provided through our Annual Giving Programs -- Title Sponsorships, Giving Circles, and Heritage Libraries, as well as outright contributions -- make it possible for JPS to bring outstanding books of Jewish interest to a wide reading public.
