Who's Who in the Jewish Bible: Cain
Cain (Hebrew origin: Spear)
(Genesis 4:1)
Cain, the eldest son of Adam and Eve, was a tiller of the soil. His brother Abel was a shepherd. One day when the brothers wished to bring an offering to God, Cain brought the fruit of the soil, while Abel brought the choicest of the firstlings of his flock. The Lord accepted Abel's offering but rejected that of Cain. God saw that Cain was distressed and advised him to control himself, and to do what was right. Cain, instead of following God's advice, asked Abel to go with him to the field; and, once there, he killed his brother. The Lord asked Cain for Abel's whereabouts. Cain pretended that he didn't know and asked God if he was his brother's keeper. God cursed him and condemned him to fail as a farmer and to ceaselessly wander the earth. Cain traveled to the land of Nod, where he settled down, married, and had a son called Enoch.
