Hanukkah Craft
STOP! This craft project calls for the use of a knife. Before beginning, either get help or the "go-ahead" from a responsible adult.

Homemade Hanukkah Menorah

Even though it's made out of clay
It's perfect for a bright holiday
What You Need:
  • self-hardening clay, about 1 1/2 lbs
  • ruler
  • butter knife
  • Hanukkah candles
  • sheet of sturdy cardboard, covered with aluminum foil
  • paintbrush
  • acrylic or tempera paint in assorted colors
Directions:
  1. On a clean work surface, roll the clay into a long cylinder with an even diameter of a little over 1”.
  2. Measure the cylinder and mark off 10 even lengths (about 1” each).
  3. Cut eight of these lengths, and leave the last two uncut (these will be the taller shammash). If the cylinders flatten when cut, gently reshape them.
  4. Using a Hanukkah candle, make a hole in 1 end of each cylinder, deep enough to hold a lighted candle. Again, reshape gently.
  5. On the cardboard base, line up the cylinders side by side, with the one for the shammash in the center. Gently press the sides of the cylinders together, using water to make them stick. (Some separation may occur when the menorah dries.)
  6. To decorate your menorah, roll out a thin coil of clay to twine around the bottom or sides. To help clay decorations adhere to the menorah, brush both surfaces with water before attaching.
  7. Let the finished menorah dry for a day or two (it will become lighter in color as it dries), and then paint it in bright colors and allow the paint to dry.

STOP! This craft project calls for the use of scissors, glue and a hole punch. Before beginning, either get help or the "go-ahead" from a responsible adult.

Menorah Wall Hanging

You can add a flame each Hanukkah night
And you won't need a match to make the candlelight
What You Need:
  • marker
  • ruler
  • yellow, dark blue, and white felt
  • scissors
  • 12” x 18” blue poster board (or a piece of cardboard painted blue)
  • white glue
  • Velcro™
  • hole punch
  • 18” piece of cord or string
Directions:
  1. Make the candles: Cut nine 3" x 1" candles from white felt.
  2. Make the flames: Cut 9 flame shapes from yellow felt.
  3. Make the candleholders: From the dark blue felt, cut eight 2” squares and one 3" x 2" rectangle for the bottom of the candles.
  4. Assemble the menorah: Take the blue poster board and place it on a flat surface. Glue the dark blue felt candleholders along the lower edge by spacing them equally apart and placing the larger candleholder in the middle or at either end for the shammash.
  5. Attach the candles: Glue a white felt candle above each holder.
  6. Attach the Velcro: Cut 9 small Velcro strips and glue 1 side above each candle. Glue the matching Velcro strip to the back of each yellow felt flame.
  7. Attach the hanging cord: Punch 2 holes along the top of the poster board, close to either end. Tie the ends of the cord or string through the holes, and your menorah is ready for hanging.
  8. Add a felt "flame" to your hanging menorah each night of Hanukkah – and don't forget the shammash!
