Submission Guidelines

The Jewish Publication Society welcomes author queries and book proposals in our fields of publication. These are listed below. Please be advised that submissions outside these areas will not be considered.

Books for Adults

JPS is interested in books for adults on the following subjects:

  • Bible Commentaries
  • General Bible Study
  • Scholarly works on Classical, Rabbinic, and Medieval Texts
  • Resources for Jewish Learning
  • Women's & Gender Studies
  • Interfaith Studies
  • Jewish Thought, Theology & Ethics
  • Hasidism & Mysticism
  • Modern Midrash
  • Folklore
JPS will not accept submissions in the following categories:
  • Fiction & Poetry
  • Memoir & Biography
  • Holocaust Studies
  • Ritual & Religious Practice
  • Holidays & Life Cycle
  • Spirituality
  • Inspirational Texts
  • Monographs
Books for Children

JPS children's books are geared for middle and young adult readers (ages 8 and up). JPS is interested in books for children on the following subjects:

  • Historical and contemporary novels with strong Jewish themes
  • Folktales & Legends
  • Midrash
  • Graphic Novels and Nonfiction
  • Interactive, educational CDs
JPS will not accept submissions in the following categories:
  • Picture books
  • Catalogs
Book Queries

If you are interested in having us consider your book for publication, please send a 1-page query that includes:

  • A brief description of the book
  • Your target audience
  • Your qualifications for writing the book
  • Names of other published work on the same topic, with an explanation of how your proposed work is different
  • Your curriculum vitae or resume including your email, address, and phone number
Attach a self-addressed, stamped envelope for reply.

To submit a formal proposal, please review the JPS Book Proposal Guidelines and prepare your proposal and manuscript sample accordingly.

PLEASE NOTE: Should JPS decline to publish your project, proposals and materials will be returned only if postage and specific mailing instructions are provided. Submissions arriving without return postage will not be returned.
